 The
purpose of the head, and neck movements is more than just to use
these muscles. These movements are easy to follow and set the stage
for being successful and for feeling GREAT!
Now that they have come up into a seated position,
explain the use of the pillow. The pillow is a wonderful prop. In
an ideal setting, everyone would have at least two pillows; one
for under the head, and one folded under the knees in the deep relaxation.
Tell your class to sit on the edge of the pillow, so that the pelvis
is tilted slightly down and forward. This is usually a more comfortable
position, especially for heavy people. Some people might be more
comfortable sitting flat. Encourage your students to experiment
with using the pillow, and to find what works best for each individual.
Sometimes what works for a person one day will be uncomfortable
on another day. Remind them that, if this happens, they should not
be unduly concerned. Flexibility of the mind is as important as
flexibility of the body. Tell them to listen to their body, trusting
it to tell them what it wants and needs. This is the key to loving
their body and themselves.
 You
need to emphasize over and over how important it is to be seated
in a comfortable position. You will find that sometimes large people
will sit with the soles of their feet together, with their knees
out and up a little, because they can't get their knees down. There
is no particular standard for a comfortable seated position, except
what feels comfortable to each individual. If a seated position
is not comfortable, have the student sit with their back against
the wall. This sequence of movements will last from 15 to 20 minutes,
so the comfort level is paramount. (Note: Two or three pillows may
be necessary to get the knees to drop below the hips, or sitting
on the edge of a chair.) Remember, straight spine and comfort are
important!
